Using Clickers in the Classroom
Whether teaching a small or large class, keeping students interested and engaged in lectures or activities could be as simple as using Clickers! Faculty also receive immediate feedback on student understanding of content. Clicker systems allow an instructor to ask questions to which students can answer immediately using hand-held devices.
Contact Tom Janke or Terri Tarr for information on the symposia sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning.
Each semester, the CTL organizes two or three full-day events focusing on a particular aspect of teaching and learning. These symposia are usually scheduled for Fridays when teaching schedules are light. There is no registration fee and they are open to the IU community, including faculty and staff from other campuses. Some, like the E.C. Moore Symposium on Teaching Excellence and Multicultural Teaching and Learning Institute (described below), are recurring annual events. Others are one time offerings on topics of special interest to the IUPUI community. First-year student success, academic integrity, and emerging technologies for teaching and learning, are among the topics considered in recent years. To read descriptions or register for upcoming symposia, check the CTL events calendar. For more information, contact the CTL by phone at 317-274-1300 or email.
EC Moore Symposium on Teaching Excellence
Edward C. Moore, served as IUPUI dean of the faculties from 1973 until 1982. Prior to his work at IUPUI, Moore was chancellor of the Board of Higher Education for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Dean Moore was a prolific author. He wrote for many national journals and published four books on pragmatism. Additionally, he reviewed and edited numerous books on subjects that included English, literature, science, and philosophy. Moore was highly regarded by his IUPUI colleagues and his gifts of persuasion, wit, and candor were especially appreciated.
The annual Edward C. Moore Symposium on Teaching Excellence is one of IUPUI's oldest public events, dating from the years of IUPUI's inception. Named in honor of Edward C. Moore, former dean of the faculties, the symposium provides an opportunity for members of the university community to gather, discuss, and present on contemporary issues in academia, particularly those that impact teaching and learning.
The central focus of the symposium changes from year to year. Recent themes include innovation in college teaching, transformative approaches to teaching and learning, multiculturalism, and competency-based education. The full-day program usually includes a nationally renowned keynote speaker, concurrent breakout sessions presented by IU faculty and staff, and a poster session. Concurrent session and presenters are selected though a competitive call for proposals process. For more information, visit the E. C. Moore Symposium Web site.
Multicultural Teaching and Learning Institute (MTLI)
Now entering its fourth year, the Multicultural Teaching and Learning Institute has grown up from its modest beginnings as an intensive workshop to a popular campuswide event. Focusing on a wide-range of diveristy issues (e.g., cultural differences, students with disabilities, international students, gender issues) the MTLI brings together students, faculty, administrators and staff to share experiences and expertise as we all strive to create an inclusive learning environment that celebrates our differences and fosters student success. Lively panel discussions, interactive workshops, and informative presentations make up the daylong program. Suggestions for future MTLI topics and speakers are always welcome. For more information, visit the MTLI Web site.
