Let's Talk Teaching: Effective Lecturing

When: Wednesday, October 08, 2008 | 12:00 PM-01:00 PM
Where: Online seminar

Presenter: Megan Palmer, School of Medicine

Do you use lecture as one of your teaching strategies? If you do, you’re not alone. The lecture is one of the most commonly used teaching methods in higher education. Used well, it can be an effective method of transmitting information and getting students motivated to learn more about a topic. If not done well, it may just put students to sleep. This session will address the appropriate use of the lecture approach, outline various ways to engage learners during a lecture, and enable participants to identify ways they can enhance their own lectures. This web-based session will be facilitated by Megan Palmer, Director of Faculty Advancement in the Health Professions and Visiting Assistant Professor in the School of Education.

This session is part of the Let's Talk Teaching webinar series which will focus on a variety of teaching topics. The sessions will be facilitated by faculty with an emphasis on sharing examples, discussing ideas, and exploring questions.

The series will be offered online via Adobe Connect on the second Wednesday of the month from noon to 1 pm. The sessions will be recorded and also available online after the session.

Prereqs for Success Series - Work-Life Balance

When: Monday, March 02, 2009 | 03:30 PM-05:00 PM
Where: IUPUI Campus Center (420 University Boulevard), Room 405

Trying to balance the demands of multiple roles is often a challenge. When you have a grant to write, papers to grade, committee meetings to attend along with children who need time and attention, an ailing parent, and your own personal health and fitness needs, how do you decide how to allocate your time and energy? There is no one-size fits all formula for balancing work and personal life priorities, and the balance that’s right for you may change over time and as circumstances change.

During this session, participants will learn about the IU policies that are in place to aid in work-life balance, consider best practices at other institutions and in business and industry ,and explore how to find the right balance in your own life.

This panel discussion will be facilitated by Kathy Grove, Director of the Office for Women. Panelists include:

  • Maggie Stimming and Jenie Paton from IUPUI Human Resources;
  • Jane Williams from the Department of Psychology;
  • Mary Dankoski from the IU School of Medicine; and
  • Carol McGarry from the IUPUI Office of Faculty Appointments and Advancement.
